Intuitive Solana wallet for the everyday user

The Problem

Most non-custodial Solana wallets were built for crypto-native power users, assuming a high level of technical literacy.

Critical capabilities like staking, swapping, and limit orders were buried behind complex multi-step menus, making them difficult for new users to discover or trust.

At the same time, portfolio views for SOL, SPL tokens, and NFTs lacked clear organization, making it difficult for users to understand what they owned at a glance.

Everyday utility such as spending crypto or purchasing gift cards existed outside the wallet ecosystem entirely, forcing users to jump between multiple apps.

The result was a fragmented experience that caused high onboarding drop-off and low feature adoption, even among users who completed initial setup.

02

The Process

User Research: Conducted discovery research with both crypto-native users and first-time wallet users to map the full onboarding and transaction journey. This helped identify the highest-friction moments in the experience, particularly around asset management, trading workflows, and transaction confirmation clarity.

Information Architecture: Redesigned the wallet around a single scrollable home screen with clearly separated asset views: Tokens, NFTs, and Library. This created a clearer mental model for users while reducing navigation complexity.

Action Simplification: Placed the wallet's most important actions directly beneath the portfolio balance, ensuring core functions were always one tap away. Primary actions included: Send, Receive, Swap, Buy, and Stake.

Trading Flow Optimization: Collapsed external DEX workflows into native in-wallet trading actions, integrating Swap, Limit Orders, and DCA directly into the interface. This reduced the average trading journey from 10–15 steps down to 3–5.

Utility Expansion: Introduced a dedicated Shop tab that allowed users to purchase gift cards and prepaid cards using their crypto holdings, bringing real-world utility directly into the wallet experience.

The Solution

Cilantro Wallet was designed as a holistic Solana wallet that unified portfolio management, DeFi trading, and everyday crypto spending into a single interface.

The product consolidated multiple fragmented workflows into one streamlined system, allowing users to manage their entire crypto lifecycle without leaving the wallet.

Key capabilities included:

Integrated trading suite with Swap, Limit Orders, and DCA powered by the Jupiter liquidity network

Native staking support through Marinade Finance

Unified portfolio management across SOL, SPL tokens, and NFTs

Transparent transaction history with deep links to Solscan

Real-world crypto spending through in-app gift card and prepaid card purchasing

The interface balanced approachability for newcomers with the information density and speed required by advanced users.

04

The Outcome

The redesigned wallet dramatically simplified the user journey while expanding the practical utility of crypto assets.

Key outcomes included:

Reduced average trading workflow from 10–15 steps to 3–5 steps

Eliminated cross-app switching by consolidating DeFi trading, NFTs, and spending tools into a single interface

Delivered a production-ready open-source Solana wallet architecture

Demonstrated that clear UX design, not additional features, is the fastest path to Web3 adoption

The project validated that simplifying complex blockchain infrastructure into intuitive user experiences significantly improves feature adoption and user confidence.

Key Product Decisions

Simplified trading flows instead of adding more features — reducing steps was more impactful than adding new order types

Consolidated DeFi, NFTs, and real-world spending into one interface rather than building separate apps for each

Designed for progressive disclosure — new users see simplicity first, power users discover depth over time

Chose Jupiter and Marinade as native integrations to cover the highest-demand DeFi actions without bloating the interface

What I Would Do Next

Add onboarding analytics to measure exactly where new users drop off and optimize the first-session experience

Introduce a fiat on-ramp directly into the wallet to remove the biggest remaining barrier for non-crypto-native users

Build a notification system for price alerts, staking rewards, and transaction confirmations to drive daily re-engagement
